Join Green Worker Cooperatives and the Murphy Institute for an intimate dialogue with Luis Alberto Dueñas Casal, co-founder of the Cuban worker cooperative SCENIUS and a leader in the Cuban worker cooperative movement. Since 2011, the Cuban government has moved to encourage the growth of worker cooperatives and transition many state-run enterprises to worker ownership.

Meanwhile in the United States, New York City's City Council and Mayor DeBlasio have made historic investments over the past three years in the growth and development of worker cooperatives. In both cases governments facing economic crises have taken unprecedented action to democratize their economies, providing an option for workers to have a direct say in their workplaces and share the profits generated by their labor. We will have an opportunity to take a deep dive into the growing cooperative economy in Cuba and New York City and explore what the future looks like for both.

SCENIUS is a Cuban professional accounting & bookkeeping cooperative, providing services to other cooperatives and new small businesses. The worker cooperative began in 2014 with 2 members and has grown rapidly to 288 worker-owners. Unlike most Cuban worker co-ops, which have converted to worker-ownership from state-ownership, SCENIUS formed as a worker cooperative startup.

Desde 2011, el gobierno de Cuba has promovido el crecimiento de las cooperativas de trabajadores y la transición de muchas empresas estatales a la propiedad de los trabajadores.

Mientras tanto, en los Estados Unidos, el Ayuntamiento de la Ciudad de Nueva York y el alcalde DeBlasio han hecho inversiones históricas en los últimos tres años para crecer y desarrollar las cooperativas de trabajadores. En ambos casos, gobiernos enfrentando crisis económicas han tomado medidas sin precedentes para democratizar sus economías, ofreciendo una opción para que los trabajadores pueden gobernar directamente sus lugares de trabajo y tambien compartir de los beneficios generado por su trabajo. La cooperativa comenzó en 2014 con 2 miembros y ha crecido rápidamente a 288 trabajadores-propietarios. A diferencia de la mayoría de las cooperativas de trabajadores cubanos, que se convirtieron en propiedad de los trabajadores de la propiedad estatal, SCENIUS se formó como una cooperativa de trabajadores de inicio.
